Tuesday's Homework

Remember to include your name in your response!!

The string used to make a circle is just a little longer than the string used to make a 5cmx5cm square.
How wide is the circle? Explain your thinking.

  1. since the perimeter of the square is 25 cm and the circles string is near there somewhere it might be near 25-35cm approximentally. it might be 30cm wide about.

  2. 5x5:25 then divide the number of the circumference by 3.14, which was 7.96 and the u have the diameter of the circle daniel S

The width of the square is 5cm. The width of the square is like the diameter of circle. So the answer would be 5cm.

The circle is about 6 cm wide (diameter). I got this answer because first, I found the perimeter of the square (L+Wx2) and it equaled 20cm. Since the perimeter of the square was about the same as the distance around the circle, I concluded that the circumference of the circle was also 20cm. Then, to find the width (diameter), I divided 20 by 3.14 and it equaled 6.36, which I rounded to 6cm.

  5. 5x5=25

    25 divided by 3.14= 7.96

The circle would be 30 cm. I know this, because 5cmx5cm would be 25cm, and if you were to add a 'little' (in this case 5cm) to it, you would get 30.

Formula for finding the perimeter of a square: (L+W) x 2

    (5+5) x 2
    = 10 x 2
    = 20 cm

Say the string was approximately 2 cm longer then the string to surround the square (circumference), then the string would be 22 cm.

Formula to find the diameter of the circle: (circumference) ÷ 3.14

    22 ÷ 3.14 ≈ 7 cm (diameter)

Therefore, the circle would be approximately 7 cm wide (diameter). In order to get this answer I first found the perimeter of the square (L+Wx2) because, the circumference of the circle was not given so I had to use the measurements of the square to find an approximate measurement for the circle. The answer for this was 20 but because the string for the circle was a little longer then the string needed to surround the square, I added 2 cm (this is approximately how much longer the string was). This equaled to 22cm. After finding the approximate circumference for the circle I divided 22cm and 3.14 (Pi) because, that is the formula that should be used in order to find the diameter using the circumference. This led me to the answer 7cm.

    5cmx5cm square string= 20cm long
    D x 3.14= 20cm (circumference)
20cm divided by 3.14= diameter (width)
20cm divided by 3.14= 6.37cm is the width of the circle
I got this answer by first finding the length of the string. Then I did diameter times 3.14 = 20cm because since the string is 20cm long the circumference should also be 20cm. Next I used the numbers I knew, 3.14 and 20, and I did 20 divided by 3.14 to get the diameter which gave me 6.37cm as the diameter, which is the width. Therefore if I did 6.37 times 3.14 I should get 20cm as the circumference.

the circle is 10cm wide, because the radius is 5 and times that by 2 is 10, but the reason the radius is 5 is because its 5cm times 5cm and that's like 5 squared so i know that when we something times something is how to figure out the radius from the diameter.

  12. 5cm because the width is like the diameter so it would be 5cm.

  13. it will be 5cm wide because the width of a square is the same as its diameter

I think the circle's width is approximately 6cm because 5cm would be the squares length and 5cm would be its width. It says the string is just a little longer and so it could be 6cm as the width (diameter.)

it should be about 5cm2 because 5cmby5cm is 5cm wide
