We Day continued...

Check out this blog for students in our board who went to the event in Toronto.

Be the first to post some info on it!!

Chris Hadfield is coming to our classroom!

Ok, so not in person. But on Oct 16th, we will take part in a virtual lesson with him over cyberspace. We have the chance to submit questions to him to answer during the lesson. Questions might be about his time on the International Space Station, or his preparation for becoming an astronaut. If you have something you want to ask, please submit your questions to me via the blog. Remember to include your name in the post.

Calories FYI

So I checked my app for the amount of calories I burned during our run today. It was a whooping 82!!

The mars bar I ate yesterday was 240 calories!!
There's a great example of the imbalance between energy in and energy out.

Today's run was 2.7km and it burned 192 calories. Still not the Mars bar :(

Search Engines

Here are some of the search engines that we checked out today.

dogpile.com

Libraries are another place to find lots of useful information. Take a look at these sites!
Hamilton Public Library’s database – http://www.hpl.ca/discovery-tools
New York Public Library’s Student Page - http://kids.nypl.org/internet/reference.cfm
You will need a library card to use some of the linked websites, so also check the webpage of other nearby libraries.
Toronto’s database is http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/databases/

First Class Homework

I have reset everyone's password to fraser now (except for Ardit). Try the login tonight from home and email me if you are having problems.

Check out the We Act post below for tonight's homework.
Remember to fill in your fitness activities for today on your chart.

We Act...

For several years Eastdale has had the opportunity to be a part of the Free The Children and Me to We movement. Students at our school have organized Halloween for Hunger, Pennies for Change, fundraising for local organizations and many other initiatives over the years. These actions have made a difference for others. They have impacted their schoolmates, their families, their community and people on the other side of the world.

For the first time, Eastdale students have the opportunity to attend the We Day conference in Toronto! I am VERY excited about this!  While I would love to be able to bring all of our class, we are only given a small amount of tickets. If you are interested in attending this conference with me, I'd like to hear from you. Tell me why it is important for you to attend, what things you have done in the past that might connect to something like We Day and how will you use what you have learned to make a difference.

Check out this link for more information on We Day

Type your response in Word and copy and paste it onto the blog here for me to read (be sure to save your work in Word as sometimes things go missing in cyberspace).

First Day Homework...

Great day today!!! I enjoyed hearing about your summer holidays and hearing about some of the things you would like to help out with at school. Tomorrow we will talk more about things that we will be doing to give back to our school community.

I know you all wrote these in your agendas, but just a final reminder for tomorrow...
-novel for independent reading at school,
-change of clothes, shoes and deodorant for gym for this week,
-begin to fill in your forms and have your parents finish filling them in,
-complete the Agenda Quiz.

What is the answer to question number 23?
When you post your answer on the blog, remember to start your post with your first name, last initial and then your answer.

Text or call your classmates to remind them to submit their homework tonight!! If we can all post a response tonight, there will be a reward in it for you!!!

September Startup

Welcome back Eagles (and good luck to any graduates of 2013 who are still checking in)!

I am really looking forward to this year with you. I know we had some of our students attend OELC over the summer, and many others took part in camps, trips and classes that have given you valuable experiences. I am looking forward to working with you to develop your talents and skills, and Eastdale is looking forward to how you will share these skills with other students in the school (assemblies, clubs, teams, ...).

Please share this blog with your parents tonight and if you have a google account, become a follower of our blog (If you don't have an account, ask your parents if you can sign up for one).

When you are posting a comment, you may need to click "Preview" first for it to work. You have to verify with a code (remember to include what is in the pic too) (it should give you a message that your comment will be visible after the moderator has seen it). Email me at sumera.fraser@hwdsb.on.ca if you are having problems with that.
I will use this blog to communicate with you and your parents about what is going on in our classroom. It will be important for you to check it regularly. I will post important information, resources and things for you to ponder. When you reply to a post, please begin your reply with your first name and last initial (unless of course I've asked you to keep your posts anonymous).

Here are a few highlights/reminders:

Bring a combination lock to school. Dudley ones seem to fit best in our particular lockers.

Thursday, September 12th is Parent Information Night for Ottawa and Meet the Teacher at Eastdale.

We will be organizing and running the Terry Fox Fun Run and Get Acquainted Day on Friday, September 27th.
Your first blog assignment is:
What are you most looking forward to this year?
What are you the most worried about?
