Short Timeline!!

Grade 8's,
We have the opportunity to apply for a grant for up to $1000.00
The small problem right now is that the applications are due by Nov. 4th (but I have to hand it in by Monday afternoon - and I won't see you until Tuesday).
Last year, the 8's applied and got funding for the RJ and DPA day. They used the money to buy the shirts, and other materials they used that day.

The information about the grant can be found at the following site
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/students/speakup/2011Application.pdf

Please spread the word around our class about this as best as you can. I know it is short notice, but I also know that as a group, you have some terrific ideas and skills and many of you are up for a good leadership challenge like this.

If you have ANY ideas please let me know ASAP (you can comment on this post or email me at sumera.fraser@hwdsb.on.ca). Feel free to print off the application package from the site.

Some things to consider about the grant are:
Will this grant create a more inclusive learning environment?
Will it develop life skills like team work or communication?

Halloween for Hunger

We will meet this coming week to start to plan. Comment with some things you think we will need to discuss at the meeting and I will post your comments for others to think about.
One thing to ponder is: How will we let our target audience know what we will be doing?

Halloween For Hunger

Over the last 5 years, Eastdale students have worked together to make life a little better for others. They've organized many events and fundraisers to raise awareness for different causes. One of the fun and easy things we have done is combined a food drive competition amongst the classes with trick-or-treating to collect food for our local food bank. In previous years we've collected 170 lbs, 240 lbs and 400 lbs! Are you up for the challenge this year?

Yes the test is tomorrow!!

We won't be back together as a group until Monday, and I wouldn't want you all stressing over it over the weekend. Therefore, we will write the test tomorrow.

On a side note, if we can manage to bring in 30 canned goods as a class tomorrow, then I will cancel the MATH test on integers. We will be starting a new unit on circles and then will donate the canned goods to the food bank at the end of the unit. Spread the word to bring in some canned goods!!

Science Test

Your test will cover:
Characteristics of Living Things
Cell Theory
Parts of Plant and Animal Cells (label them and know their functions)
We will look at parts of a microscope another time.

Glad you checked!!

So don't forget your math homework tonight pg. 391 #2 and 3. Remember to try and keep your communication of your answers clear like we did in class today. We will have a short assessment on integers this week before we move onto our next topic which involves exploring circles and cylinders.
(if you happen to be one of the people who doesn't have a textbook and forgot to pick up the copy of the questions, you will need to be resourceful to get the questions that you need to answer)

If you did not finish the factory to cell comparison in class today, you need to have it completed for homework tonight. This will help you for your test on Thursday in science.

No weekly challenge this week other than to study your cell information, math and do a bit of research on a global issue that interests you. We will use this information in our writing in class shortly.

Your question to comment on is:
What was the purpose behind the 2 kids, 1 crayon activity that we completed earlier in the year?
Please remember to include your name in your comment.

Gym outside tomorrow due to elections in the gym.
Bring new gym clothes and deodorant!!

Homework - I should still have all my fingers - poster sheet complete for tomorrow.

MAD SCIENCE!!

Today's science was AWESOME!! We prepared wet mounts to look at onion cells under our microscopes. Eric had the great idea to take a photo through the microscope of the cells. Here is some of what we saw!
1 Describe the nucleus in each cell.
2 Which picture shows low resolution and medium resolution?
3 About how many nuclei can you see in the medium resolution picture?
4 About how many cells can you see in the medium resolution picture?

Today's Wrap Up

So the girls' needles are over with for now. Picture day is done. Special thanks to Rade's Salon for all the great work on the boys' hairdos!
We linked our art with our literacy today and created a 'Super Switch.' You've done a great job creating your switches and you've chosen interesting and effective words to motivate you to do something 'super' each day when you turn on your light switch. (Maybe it is even as simple as turning off the switch when you leave the room:)

Some of us aren't checking this blog very often. So, here's a challenge for those of you that do.
Check out my blog from last year and tell me who is in the picture from the most recent post. Send me a comment with the answer and i'll give you 5 bonus chips for your group this week. Don't forget to put your name in the post so I know who to give them to. Tell your classmates to check it out too!

See you in the morning.

Weekly Challenge

The product of two integers is -144.
The sum of the integers is -7.
What are the two integers?

Make up another question involving the product and the sum or difference of two integers.

Magazines Wanted!!

We will be using some magazines for art tomorrow and I'd like to have you bring some extras in if you have some old ones at home.

Don't forget to do your narrative plot (3 points for each of the parts - Intro, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Denouement for the movie of your choice) for tomorrow.
Parents, we did a question today for math that I will use as part of their mark and I will continue gathering data this week from their classwork on integers. We've learned how to add, subtract and multiply and tomorrow we'll dive into dividing integers. Bottom line. If they told you there is no test tomorrow now, they're right.

Home discussion around global issues like child labour, pollution, global warming, war and other topics will help your child in our current unit in literacy.

Class Switches

So we've mixed things up a bit by creating a 7/8 split. We will be together a fair amount though and just finished brainstorming a new schedule to make it all work. Both classes are impacted by the new schedule. We will be together on Day 2, and 4 for the first 3 periods (pe with Mrs. Fraser, Ms. Jamani and the 7's and science with all the 8's), then on Day 2 and 5 during period 6, Mrs. Kindt will have the 7's for Social Studies and Mrs. Fraser will have all the 8's.
This means that French has changed a bit too. On Day 2 it will be during period 8 and Day 4 it will be during period 7.

The math test for my class of 8's will be on Tuesday. It covers adding, subtracting and multiplying integers. Make sure you can explain the WHY behind the rule (not just because your teacher said so!!)
