Help Wanted!!!

Grade 8's,
On Thursday night at the Meet the Teacher, we will be running a BINGO game for the families. I need a short blurb written up about this to tell the families about it. There will be some cool prizes too. We will run the bingo at 6:30 from the stage in the gym. There is no cost, we are trying to draw awareness for our biweekly Bingo that we need adult volunteers for (it is from 4-7 on every other Friday night at the Delta Bingo, and involves the volunteer counting quarters.) I have a few student volunteers for the game on Thursday night, but I could use a few more.

We are going to do our first fundraiser for graduation and sell drawstring gymbags with the Eastdale logo on them. There will be a sample bag to check out at the Meet the Teacher night and we will take orders for them. The cost will be $...(I'll let you know tomorrow after I figure out the math). We need a write up for this as well, and I will need some volunteers to work at the table. Please let me know if you are available for any of these responsibilities.

Thanks,
Mrs. F

PS Your journal entries today from Parvana's point of view are quite good. Keep working on your Superhero stories (due Friday) and remember to get rid of the DW's (dead words) in your writing to make it more interesting. (I was so proud today when I witnessed several of you looking up at the tombstones on our wall to find more interesting words for your journal entries).

Monday Math

Here are the images we worked on for prime factorization today.
The third picture was showing the smallest number you could make with the factors 2, 3, and 5. We figured out that if the factors were all prime numbers, when we multiply them together, we will get the smallest number possible. In the blue example, we knew that 14 was a composite number so we broke it down into its prime factors and then multiplied 2, 3 and 7 together to get 42 (the smallest number possible that has 2, 3 and 14 as its factors).
This math may seem a little strange or like something that you wouldn't use very often (or ever) but you will find it very helpful to understand this when we are working with fractions later in the year(and, more importantly, later in your life!).

2 On a Crayon

2 Students...One paper...One crayon...One task. Create a new insect (or candy machine) and draw it in ten minutes.

What did you learn from this task about working together?

Day 2

Today we did 2 Stars and a Wish on a peers graphic organizer for the Superhero Writing assignment. We quickly figured out that we need to make connections among our ideas to help develop it into better writing. In order to do this we need to try out more than one idea. (we compared our writing to choosing the right colour of paint for a wall - it is important to try out more than one shade of the colour). We connected our pizza-delivering superhero to a weakness with food (Big Mac sauce) in order to tie it all together.

In math, we looked at exponents and found the following out.

Welcome Back!!

Thanks for a wonderful first day grade 8's. I am really looking forward to this year with you.  Please share this blog with your parents tonight and if you have a google account, become a follower of our blog (If you don't have an account, ask if you can sign up for one).
When you are posting a comment, you may need to click "Preview" first for it to work. (it should give you a message that your comment will be visible after the moderator has seen it). Email me at sumera.fraser@hwdsb.on.ca if you are having problems with that.
Here is a bit of what we talked about today to show your family.
Remember to have your first paragraph's information for your Superhero completed on your graphic organizer for tomorrow (in pointform only - we'll do sentences later).
