Something to wonder about...

One of our lit circle groups was reading about the barcode tattoo. Here is a link to a news story from today. Can you draw any connections to what you have read? What do you think about the ideas in the article?

Literature Circles - Your best work.

You've had a number of new learnings and reflections as we have worked through this last round of literature circles. I've been excited to read your responses and to listen to your discussions (they have made Friday nights at Emma's basketball very enjoyable - I'm sure the other parents think I'm a little bit nuts as I sit on the sidelines laughing and nodding at my computer like I was part of your discussions).

I was able to get a good sense of your understanding of what you were reading and I also got to know more about the book and you as well.

Now I'd like you to take one of your responses that you feel was your best work and publish it onto the blog. As you work, you may make edits to your work to improve it and make it even better.

Convincing Argument Success Criteria

Here are our notes from class. Use these to help with your feedback. Remember to include things that they have done well and things that they need to do to improve their work.

My Convincing Argument has....
  • contains repetition (gets stuck in the readers head)
  • strong first sentence (makes reader consider your POV)
  • intro clearly outlines the topic
  • body has 3 good points in my argument
  • builds on the reader's emotion (discusses consequences)
  • contains counter argument evidence but emphasizes the benefit of our argument
  • conclusion restating main opinion
  • has a call to action - tells your reader that they need to do something

Dividing by 0.1, 0.01,...

Homework

Remember to get your agenda homework completed.
Also, I want you to choose 3 of your best questions that you have made so far for lit circles and have them written out on a small square of paper (post-it note size) and we will pin them up on our thinking matrix tomorrow. Make sure they are clear and easy to read and I want you to have an idea of which category they should fit under on the matrix.

Remember for tomorrow: pencil crayons, clean shoes, $2 for TCBY

Salt water, fresh water and bouyancy

Here's the video from class today if you want to review it.We watched the first 5 minutes or so on bouyancy.

Salt water vs fresh water and eggs!

How can you get an egg to be suspended in the middle of the water?

Using the information that you have learned in class, can you explain how a life preserver works?

Check this site out for some interesting extras! Or find out more about the Dead Sea.

From South Africa...

Hello Grade 8s Miss M here from South Africa,

Here in South Africa at the Lutheran Center we are staying at, we do not have any internet or cable. I am at an internet cafe now where for R10 we get 1 hour of internet. In Canadian that is only 1 dollar! Can you believe it!

So far, I have been able to take a boat to see where Seals live on Seal Island, go to Boulder Beach to see where the penguins have decided to live since 1985. Imagine seeing penguins at a sandy beach in 28C weather! On our drive to Cape Hope we saw baboons on the side of the highway and a herd of zebras.

I have met my new grade 4 class and they have the most unique names where some have clicks (cluck) in their name. Next week I am teaching a new grade 4 class and the week after grade 7. This country is the most beautiful place I have ever been.

Hopefully I will be able to talk to you soon!
